Kyokushin Karate which was known as Oyama Karate began its roots in Myanmar in the early 1960'(s). In the 1970'(s) there was a karate boom in Myanmar and many Karate clubs were opened and Karate taught then were mixed, mostly Shotokan and Kyokushin.

Sensei Min Lwin, opened his first dojo in April 1975 in Yangon. The style then taught was Shotokan but the non-contact kumite style did not satisfy Sensei Min Lwin and he started to take interest in Kyokushin Karate and contacted Tokyo Honbu and became an international overseas member in 1976.

In 1983, Shihan Peter Chong and Sensei Joe Chin visited Myanmar to train the members the Kyokushin-Way of Karate.

In 1984 the Myanmar Branch became an official dojo of the International Karate Organization (IKO) recognized by Sosai Masutatsu Oyama.

The IKO (Myanmar) has grown in to an organization which now has (40) dojos in (11) States and Divisions and has an membership of over 15,000 members.

1952

Founder Shihan Min Lwin was born in Yangon , the only of Mr . R.E.L Pereira retired Head of English Department University of Education Rangoon & Daw Khin Kyi.


1962

Started Martial Arts training in Judo & Akido.


1965

Started training in Boxing at St . Paul's Boxing Club.


1966

Moved to Mandalay with parents , was introduced to Karate, started to take a keen interest in it immediately.It was also the time when Mas Oyama's Books " What is Karate ? " " This is Karate " were published.


1969

Moved back to Yangon , joined " Murayama Dojo " and trained under Sensei Thein Win . At that time Muay -Thai kick boxing and Jeet Kune - Do techniques were also practised at the dojo.


1974

After attaining black belt , started teaching Karate to friends & kids who wish to learn karate.


1975

Opened first Dojo on April 1, at 345 , Pyay Road in Yangon and named it Gojoku Karate Club. It was the start of I.K.O Myanmar . The first assistant instructors were Sempai Wai Lwin , Myo Sann & Ye Htut.


1976

On Feb:1 , had to move dojo to 343 , Pyay Road , due to training space difficulties. Training was packed with over 60 students at one class.

On Sept: 11,Sensei Min Lwin became a Life -time member to the International Karate Organization Honbu and began co-respondence with Sosai Oyama , the founder of Kyokushin Karate.

On Sept: 28 ,had to move again to 77, University Avenue ,because of training space.


1977

Started co-respondence with Shihan Peter Chong as per instruction from Tokyo Honbu.


1978

Was invited to attend in the 2 nd S.E Asia Branch Chief Conference held on Dec: 17 in Calcultta, India. Could not attend due to passport difficulties at the time.


1979

May 13, 1 st Dan grading exam was held . 30-men Kumite was first introduced in the grading syllabus in Burma.

Aug: 23, held a karate demonstration for visiting VIP guests from Japan on special request from the Sports & Physical Education Department. The demo was done jointly by United, Murayama , Tiger, Hikari & Dagon Clubs.


1980

May 18, Dan Grading Exams was held. With the release of the documentary on the 2 nd WORLD OPEN TOURNAMENT (THE GOD HAND) , Sensei Min Lwin decided to change Technical Syllabus completely to Kyokushin. D .C COOK'S Kyokushin Karate book was used as a Technical Reference together with all Sosai Oyama 's books.


1982

Dan Grading was held on Feb: 1. Was invited to send a team to participate in the 1 st S.E Asia Open Karate Tournament held in Singapore on

Oct: 9. Win Myat Aung , Nyunt Han were our seeded fighters, but application for passports were denied again.

Oct:30,gave a demostration at the German Ambassador's residence.The demo was a great success and many diplomats started taking karate classes.


1983

Jan:10 , Instructor Ohn Ko Ko opened first branch dojo at Regional College 3 , Kemmendine Campus.

July 5~7 , Shihan Peter Chong( 5 th Dan) & Sensei Joe Chin ( 4 th Dan) visited Myanmar and introduced all members & instructors alike into the proper way of Kyokushin training. The Kihons , Kihon-ido , Katas,Kumite & applications were covered in intensive day/night training . According to instructions from Shihan Peter Chong,Gojuku Karate Club was officially changed to Burma Oyama-Karate-Do Kyokushinkaikan.

Dec: 25,Dan Grading was held in Rangoon.


1984

Was appointed Official Burma Branch Chief from Tokyo Honbu & Sensei Min Lwin first appeared in IKO WORLD POWER MAP.

On Feb: 17, an official certificate was issued directly by Sosai Oyama. Instructor Aung Myint joined our organization and established the first Mandalay Branch Dojo.

On May 3, Instructor Than Tun Aung opened a dojo in Insein Tsp: .

On Aug: 27 , had to move headquarters dojo to 68 , New Link Rd , Old Myoma Association , Dagon Tsp, Yangon.


1985

June 30, 1 st Full Contact open Karate Tournament in Burma, was held in Mandalay at the BAHTOO Indoor Stadium organized by Dojo Operator Aung Myint. The Tournament was a great success where many kick boxers entered. The finalist were all Kyokushin fighters . This tournament marked a history which became a milestone , and the Mandalay Branch grew tremendously onwards .

Nov: 3 ,Twante Branch Dojo was started by Instructor Wai Lwin.


1986

Feb: 24 , Instructor Ohn Ko Ko started a dojo in Kamayut Tsp.

May 1, Hintada Branch Dojo was started by Instructor Bo Win.


1987

Apr: 4 , Hlaing Branch Dojo was opened by Instructor Khin Hlaing.

Apr: 24 ~ May 27,Summer Karate Course was taught by Instructor Thet Naing at the Aung San Indoor Stadium.

Apr: 26,Started discussions on holding a Full Contact Tournament in Yangon at Sensei Min Lwin residence.

May 1, a 2 nd meeting was held again at Burma Karate Club in 23 - B Kyaikkasan Road.

July 21 , Burma Kyokushin Karare Organization (BKKO) was formed to which Sensei Min Lwin was elected Gen - Secretary .

Dec:1 , Bahan Branch Dojo was opened in Inya Road,Kamayut Tsp by Instructor Khin Hlaing. In a united effort to form the Burma Karate Do Federation 18 major Karate Clubs joined together to hold a Karate mass demonstration for the general public on Dec: 27. Over 500 members demonstrated the power Kyokushin Karate.


1988

Feb: 18, Instructor Hla Pe & Than Ke Aung from Sittwe were appointed to establish a branch dojo for Rakhine State. Lashio branch dojo was opened by Instructor Kyaw Moe, Fahlam Branch Dojo by Instructor Mosaic.

Mar: 27, Kyokushin Demonstration for Armed Forces Day at National Indoor Stadium (NIS) 1 .


1989

May 6, Dawbon Tsp Branch Dojo was opened by Instructor Sein Win.

June 5, Shihan Peter Chong (6 th Dan) accompained by Sensei Vince Ko ( 3 rd Dan) & Sensei Jimmy Ng (3 rd Dan) arrived Yangon and visited many Kyokushin Branch Dojos in Yangon Area.

June 6 , Meeting with Sports & Physical Education Department Director General Col: Aung Din .The Director General was very much impressed with Shihan Peter Chong and agreed to send a team to participate in the 4 th ASIA OPEN KARATE TOURNAMENT . Dan Grading was conducted by Shihan Peter Chong and Sensei Min Lwin was awarded 2 nd DAN.

June 7~8, Shihan Peter Chong and members conducted Classes in many dojos and held a All Burma Branch Chief Meeting at Thuwana Dojo .

June 9,Shihan Peter Chong and members visited Bago.

June 10 , Shihan Peter Chong and members left Yangon.

June 12,An Official Meeting was held at the Aung San Indoor Stadium presided by Sports & Physical Education Director General Col: Aung Din to organize a Selection Tournament to select a team to represent Myanmar in the 4 th ASIA OPEN FULL CONTACT TOURNAMENT to be held in Hokkaido , Japan. This is the first opportunity for Myanmar members to experience International competition.

July 28~29 , The 1st Selection Tournament was held at the National Indoor Stadium (NIS) - 1 where the team selected to represent Myanmar were chosen as Bo Win , Kyaw Min, Hla Shwe & Thein Swe. About 5,000 spectators attended. S/Okkalapa branch dojo was opened by Kyaw Min, Taung -gyi (Shan State) Dojo by Ko Ko Oo & Nyunt Mg Swe opened another branch Dojo in Mandalay. From July to Sept: , a 3 - month Intensive training camp was held for 22 nd ARMED FORCES DIVISION officers by Instructor Thein Hlaing,a second training course from Oct to Dec by Instructor Maung Maung Myint.

Sept: 12 , Instructor Thet Naing opened the S/ Okkalapa Branch Dojo.

Oct: 22, Myanmar Kyokushin Karate Organization By-Laws were established in accordance with Honbu By-Laws. The executive committeee members were selected where Sensei Min Lwin was elected Chairman, Sensei Maung Maung Myint & Sensei Aung Myint ( Mandalay) became vice-chairman(s). Sensei Maung Maung Zaw became Gen-Secretary.

1994

Apr: 27, Mayangone Branch Dojo was started by Instructor Thein Hlaing.

May 4~12, Sensei Min Lwin attended the Yugawara Branch Chief Camp & participated in the Dan Test which was presided by Kancho Matsui. It was the 1 st Camp training & Dan grading after Sosai Oyama passed away ( Apr: 26) . Sensei Min Lwin was awarded 3 RD DAN.

May 28-29, A fund raiser IKO tournament was organised at the National Indoor Stadium (NIS) - 1. The funds were donated to the Armed Forces Karate-Do Sub-committee.

Jun:1 , Myanmar Kyokushin Karate Organization (MKKO) was official changed to International Karate Organization (IKO) Myanmar.

June 10, Insein Branch (4) Dojo was started by Instructor Myint Swe.

Aug: 15, Monsoon Karate - Do Basic Courses was organized at 4 Basic Educational High Schools in Mayangone Tsp by Instructors Khin Hlaing , Thein Hlaing & Thaung Aye.

Nov: , Winter Karate-Do Basic Course was organized at S.H.S 1 Dagon by Instructor Khin Hlaing.

Dec: 30~31 , Dan Grading Test was held in Yangon.


1995

Mar : 21, IKO Myanmar was registered to the Myanmar Karate-Do Federation under a Myanmar name " Aye-wa-ret" meaning in English " EVEREST" which symbolises a Big Mountain (OYAMA) and the Ultimate Truth (KYOKUSHIN) .

Apr:, Instructor Than Tun started the 13 / YMCA Branch Dojo in Madalay , Instructor Than Shwe in Taung-Gyi.

May 20-21,4 th SHAN STATE IKO OPEN TOURNAMENT was held in Taung-Gyi at the Taung-Gyi Indoor Stadium in Shan State .

Sept: 9~11, Sensei Min Lwin & Instructor Aung Myint (DOP) from Mandalay Branch Dojo attended the ASIAN PACIFIC KARATE CONVENTION held in Singapore.

Nov: 7~11, Sensei Min Lwin participated in the Mitsumine Camp Training and Dan Grading Test. Sensei Min Lwin was awarded 4 th DAN . The grading test was presided by Kancho Matsui.

1996

Jan: 1, The 1st monthly issue of Myanmar Kyokushin Gazette was published for Kyokushin members. Sensei Min Lwin wrote most articles. This monthly gazette was much appreciated by Instructors and members alike. Sosai Oyama's philosophy of BUDO KARATE was mostly covered.

Mar:5~6, Shihan Peter Chong (7 th Dan) arrived Yangon , taught a general class & a black belts class.

Mar:7, 2 nd Dan Grading Exams was held at Judson Hall, Pyay Road. 30 Senior instructors from various States & Divisions participated.

Mar:8~10, Shihan Peter Chong visited Mandalay Branch Dojo with Sensei Min Lwin and trained members in self-defence techniques and advanced Katas.

Mar:11, Shihan Peter Chong left Yangon.

Apr: 26, S/Dagon Myo Thit Branch Dojo ws started by Instructor Khin Sein.

Nov:3 , 2 nd Bago Open Full Contact Tournament was held in Bago.

Feb:3, Magwe Branch Dojo was established by Instructor Tin Maung Aye.

Mar:23, Yangon Region Dojo operators & Instructors Meeting was held at Old Myoma Association Meeting Hall . Sensei Maung Maung Myint retired from his position as Vice-Chairman. Instructor Thet Naing was elected to be Yangon Region Representative by unanimous vote.

Apr: 5, S/Dagon Myo Thit Branch (2) Dojo was opened by Instructor Dawna.

Apr: 18,Yenanchaung Branch Dojo in Magwe Division was started by Instructor Khin Sein.

May 15, S/Okkalapa Branch Dojo was opened by Instructor Nyi Nyi Lwin.

Jun:22, Olympics Day (IKO) Karate Tournament was held in Mandalay at the Bahtoo Indoor Stadium. Men & Women Kumite events were included.The tournament was a great success.

Jun: 23, All Myanmar Branch Cheifs Meeting was held at Bahtoo Stadium conference hall in Mandalay. 33 BC 's from various States & Divisions attended. IKO Myanmar's Executive committeee was elected and IKO Myanmar's By-Laws were approved. Sensei Min Lwin was elected Chairman, together with Sensei Aung Myint ( Mandalay) as vice-chairman & Sensei Khin Hlaing (Yangon) as Gen-Secretary.

Jun:23-24, Dan Grading Test was held in Mandalay.

Sept: 10, Wun Thwin Branch in Magwe Division was opened by Instructor Kyaw Sein Win.

Dec:14, Upon invitation of IKO Myanmar , Nicholas Pettas (3rd Dan) from Tokyo Honbu arrived Yangon to train members in Myanmar.

Dec:15~19, Sensei Nicholas together with Sensei Min Lwin travelled to Mandalay Branch Dojo to train members from various parts of Northern Myanmar Region.Over 100 members attended.

Dec:21~24, Instructor's Refresher Course was held at the National Indoor Stadium (NIS)-1 in Yangon.

Dec:24, General Class for members in Yangon was held at Thihadipa Indoor Stadium in Yangon.

Dec: 25~27, Sensei Nicholas trained BC 's from all over Myanmar at the BC Camp held on Chaung Tha Beach in Pathein, Ayeyarwaddy Division.

Dec: 28, Sensei Nicholas visited Kyaikthiyo Pogoda ( The famous holy Pagoda built on the Holy Rock) in the morning and left Yangon in the late evening.

Dec: 29, IKO (Myanmar) Grading Syllabus 1997 was established in accordance with Honbu's Grading Syllabus.

1998

Jan:3-4, Dan Grading Test was held in Mandalay.

Jan:29-30, Shihan Peter Chong ( 7 th Dan) & Mrs Chong visited Yangon . Trained instructors and lectured a Referee /Juding Seminar at Old Myoma Association's training facilities.

Jan: 31, Shihan Peter Chong took the 2 nd Dan Grading Test at Thihadipa Indoor Stadium in Than Lynn. 11 instructors took the exam.

Feb: 1, Shihan Peter Chong & members visited the famous Kyaikthiyo Pagoda together with Sensei Min Lwin and Senior Instructors. Also visited the famous chinese Goddess of Vixtue Temple in China Town,Yangon.

Jun: 22, Sensei Kiyofumi Abe ( 4 ASIAN CHAMPION) & Sensei Ryu Narushima (World Light Weight Champion) visited Yangon to give a Karate demonstration to VIP personnel from the Myanmar Sports Council & Ministry of Sports & Physical Education .The demo was denied audience by the MKF.

Jun:23, Sensei Abe & Narushima took a general class for instructors & members at the Thihadipa Indoor Stadium in Than Lynn ,Yangon.

Jun: 24, Both left Yangon.

2000

Apr: 4~7 Kyokushin Karate Clinic was held in Rakhine State at the Sittwe Indoor Stadium which was lectured by Sensei Min Lwin together with Instructors Khin Hlaing , Bo Win & Sein Win. Over 100 members participated.

Sept:1, Instructor Kyaw Moe (Bago) was expelled from IKO (Myanmar).

Oct:9 ~Nov: 10 , Karate Self-defence Course (1) was held at the No 12, Military Intellgence Training Camp

in Bahan Township . Instructor Tun Tun Naing was assigned as trainer. (40) officers were trained.


2001

Mar:28, Sensei Aung Myint (Mandalay) was expelled from IKO (Myanmar) . He publicly declared himself as Branch Chief of OKADA KYOKUSHIN ORGANIZATION, so the EC members decided to expel him.


2002

Dec: 15, The 2 nd Rakhine State Full Contact Open Tournament was held at kyauk-Daw, Rakhine State. The Tournament was a great success.


2003

Jan: 10~12, All Myanmar Branch Chief Camp was held at Ngwe-Saung Beach in Pathein , Ayeyarwaddy Division.

Feb: ~ Apr: , Karate Self -Defence Course (2) was held again at the No .12 Military Intelligence Training Camp. Instructors Thet Naing & Sein Win were assigned as trainers . (50) officers were trained.

Aug: 31, Tamwe Branch Dojo was started by Instructor Saw Thar Maung.


2004

Jan: 8~11, Dan Grading Test was held at the Branch Chief Camp organized in Ngwe-Saung Beach , Pathein. 28 Dojo operators & instructors attended.

Feb: 7, Instructor & Dojo operator Ohn Ko Ko was expelled from IKO Myanmar.

Feb: ~ Apr: , Karate Self-defence (Advance) Course 3 was held at the No 12 Military Intelligence Training Camp. Instructors Thet Naing & Sein Win were incharge.

Apr:, Bahan Branch Dojo was started at the Fitness Centre, Yuzana Hotel facilities. This dojo was operated by Instructor Khin Hlaing assisted by Sempai Shoto Kanazawa.


2005

Jan: 7~9, Dan Grading Test & Branch Chief Camp was held in Ngwe Saung Beach ,Pathein.

Jan: 9, State & Division Annual Branch Chief Meeting was held at Ngwe-Saung. Sensei Hla Pe (Rakhine State) was elected vice-chairman & Instructor Nyunt Mg Swe as Mandalay Division Representative .

Mar: 1~May 10 , A Karate Course was held at No:1 Military Intelligence Camp in Mayangone Tsp which was taught by Instructor Sein Kyi & Sein Win.

Jun: 4, IKO Asia & Middle East organization Chairman Shihan Peter Chong( 8 th Dan) arrived Yangon.

Jun: 5, A referee & judging clinic was given by Shihan Peter Chong & attended the 1 st KYOKUSHIN FAMILY TOURNAMENT organized at Summit Park View Hotel facilities.

Jun: 6, Shihan Peter Chong took the 3 rd Dan Grading Test & a Technical class for senior instructors of IKO Myanmar.

Oct:30, 2 nd KYOKUSHIN FAMILY TOURNAMENT was held at Thihadipa Indoor Stadium in Than Lynn.

Nov: , IKO Myanmar 's 1 st Power Map was printed & published for all members.


2006

Jan: 21-22 , Dan Grading Test was held in Yangon. SUNDAY BLACK BELTS CLASS was started at the Yuzana Fitness Centre Dojo. Sensei Min Lwin lectured every week.


2007

Mar: 1, Myitkyina Branch (2) Dojo was started by Instructor Sinwa Aung.

Sept:21, IKO Myanmar Technical Syllabus 2007 was issued.

Nov: 16~18, Sensei Min Lwin together with fighter Zaw Win Htun, coach Thet Naing attended the 9 th WORLD OPEN KARATE TOURNAMENT held in Tokyo , Japan.

Nov: 19~21, Sensei Min Lwin attended the Mitsumine Dan Promotion Camp and participated in the gurelling 50-men Kumite requirement for 5 th Dan grading. Sensei Min Lwin was awarded 5 th Dan and tittle of SHIHAN.


2008

Oct:25, Shihan Min Lwin together with coach Thet Naing & Fighters Zaw Win Htun , Tun Tun Linn & Aung Phyo Lin attended the 11 ASIA OPEN FULL CONTACT KARATE TOURNAMENT held in Singapore.


2009

Mar:1, Myitkyina YMCA Branch Dojo was re-started by Instructor Barang Aung .(Instructor S-Gun Shaung having retired.)

Mar: 1, Yangon Region Dojo operators & instructors General Meeting was held at Yangon Fitness Centre Dojo. IKO Myanmar Technical Committee for Yangon Region was reformed.

Dec: 20~24, 2009 Myanmar BC Seminar was held at Yuzana Fitness Centre Dojo with day /evening classes. The seminar was well documented in order to provide a technical reference video.

Dec: 26~27, Dan Grading Test was held in Yangon.


2010

Apr:5, TRAINING RECORD CARD for all IKO Myanmar members was issued to keep track of members training in various parts of Myanmar.

Jun: , Instructor Than Tun was elected as Branch Representative for Rakhine State and to be assisted by Instructor Saw Thar Maung & Zaw Zaw .

Jun: 25 , 2009 Myanmar BC Seminar DVD (2) volumes was released.

Dec: 25-26, Dan Grading Test was held in Yangon.


2011

Jan: 1, Tamwe Branch Dojo was re-started by Sensei Hla Pe.

Feb: 12 , Shihan Min Lwin was elected Vice-Chairman of Karate Black Belts Association (Yangon) . The KBA (Yangon) consists of all Karate-Do styles in Myanmar.

Feb: Instructor Than Tun (DOP) of Sittwe Branch Dojo passed away.Instructor Saw Thar Mg was appointed DOP for Sittwe Branch Dojo & Sempai 's Zaw Zaw , San Thein to assist him.

Feb: ~ Apr: , Summer Karate Course was held in Sittwe , Rakhine State . Over 100 Students attended.

Jun: ~Aug: , Preparations for organizing of IKO Full-Contact Championships in Yangon co-jointly by KBA (Yangon).
